A healthcare surrogate is an important piece of your estate plan. The surrogate is the person you designate to make heath care decisions for you in the event you cannot. Your surrogate is typically your spouse or significant other- someone who is familiar with you and your health care needs. The surrogate contains a HIPPA waiver (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) that allows your designee to speak to your caregivers about decisions that affect your healthcare. You should always select an alternate in the event your spouse or significant other is unable or unwilling to serve as your surrogate. A healthcare surrogate is considered a less restrictive alternative to the appointment of a guardian.
